About the Breeding Bird Survey
The BTO/JNCC/RSPB Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is a national volunteer project aimed at keeping track of changes in the breeding populations of widespread bird species in the UK.
In over 3200 1km square across the UK, birds are counted on two occasions each breeding season by volunteers walking a 2km route through the square and recording everything that is seen or heard. We are always looking to expand this scheme, so new volunteers are welcome.
The BBS in London North
This map shows the BTO London North region and the locations of BBS squares in the region. Those shown in grey are available to be surveyed this year. Green squares have existing volunteers, whereas those in red were randomly selected but have access problems.
